Lack Of Satellite Bandwidth Limiting French UAVs

French Air Chief: UAVs Taxing Available Satellite Bandwidth -- Defense News

DUBAI - A move to a new standard communications band is needed because of a saturation of current bandwidth, French Air Chief of Staff Gen. Jean-Paul Palomeros said Nov. 12.

Increasingly relied-upon unmanned aerial vehicles such as Predators, Reapers and the French Harfang generate huge amounts of data, including full motion video, and complex sensors such as high definition video, laser designators, imaging radar, ground moving target indicators and multispectral imagers demand high bandwidth for transmission, Palomeros told an Air Chiefs conference ahead of the Dubai Airshow's Nov. 13 opening.

What emotion does your youth culture valorize and what social form does it envision?

William Deresiewicz takes inventory.
For the hippies, the emotion was love: love-ins, free love, the Summer of Love, all you need is love. The social form was utopia, understood in collective terms: the commune, the music festival, the liberation movement.

The beatniks aimed at ecstasy, embodied as a social form in individual transcendence. Theirs was a culture of jazz, with its spontaneity; of marijuana, arresting time and flooding the soul with pleasure (this was before the substance became the background drug of every youth culture); of flight, on the road, to the West; of the quest for the perfect moment.

The punks were all about rage, their social program nihilistic anarchy. "Get pissed," Johnny Rotten sang. "Destroy." Hip-hop, punk's younger brother, was all about rage and nihilism, too, at least until it turned to a vision of individual aggrandizement.

As for the slackers of the late '80s and early '90s (Generation X, grunge music, the fiction of David Foster Wallace), their affect ran to apathy and angst, a sense of aimlessness and pointlessness. Whatever. That they had no social vision was precisely what their social vision was: a defensive withdrawal from all commitment as inherently phony.
And what of these kids today? Are we going to call them the "hipsters?" Deresiewicz prefers "millennials." He diagnoses the emotion as niceness, which doesn't seem hip at all. (Not that hippies were hip.) Is niceness an emotion? Deresiewicz toys with "post-emotional," then comes up with "the affect of the salesman." And that's not very nice at all. What "social form" do these little jerks get? Deresiewicz assigns them: small business
Our culture hero is not the artist or reformer, not the saint or scientist, but the entrepreneur. (Think [...]

CIA agent in police triggers probe

GulfNews

Differing explanations offered on posting in department amid fears of domestic spying
New York Council members Daniel Drumm and Robert Jackson
listen as NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly testifies
before the public safety committee.
Washington: Working inside the New York Police Department is one of the CIA's most experienced clandestine operatives. He arrived in July as the special assistant to the deputy commissioner of intelligence. While his title is clear, his job responsibilities are not.

Federal and city officials have offered differing explanations for why this top CIA officer was assigned to a municipal police department since AP revealed the assignment in August.

The CIA is prohibited from spying domestically, and its unusual partnership with the New York Police Department (NYPD) has troubled top lawmakers and prompted an internal investigation.

The last time a CIA officer worked so closely with the NYPD, beginning in the months after the 9/11 attacks, he became the architect of aggressive police programmes that monitored Muslim neighbourhoods.

With that earlier help from this CIA official, the police put entire communities under a [...]

As Front Lines Disappear Female Military Roles Change

Female Military Roles Change As Front Lines Disappear -- NewsOK

Female soldiers say it's time people put aside traditional ideas about their place in combat. Oklahoma lost its first female soldier in combat earlier this month.

The U.S. Army and Marines traditionally don't allow women to serve in front-line combat roles.

But in wars such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan, there are no front lines. The recent death of Spc. Sarina Butcher, 19, of Checotah, should serve as a reminder that traditional concepts of women in combat are no more, said female soldiers serving in Afghanistan and the state's first female Air National Guard commander.

Butcher, 19, is the first female member of the Oklahoma National Guard to die in war. She and another soldier, Sgt. Christopher Gailey, 26, of Ochelata, died Nov. 1 after their vehicle was hit with a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

Simulating Afghan Battle Conditions In Camp Lejeune

Marine Trainer Brings Afghanistan to the U.S. -- FOX News

The Marines at Camp Lejeune have a new state-of-the-art facility in North Carolina that goes to great lengths to make soldiers feel like they are on other side of the planet. A 32,000-square-foot warehouse is filled the aromas of roasting meat and cedar; a walkway of made of dirt and gravel -- even faux roadside bombs which can be detonated at a misstep. Afghan natives wait inside for the Marines during every training run.

"Before they come in here they are not sure what to expect and they don't really know what it is," said the infantry immersion trainer site lead Vince Soto. "After they go through it, it is usually -- wow."

Occupy Portland showdown: Protesters flood city park in fight with police over eviction

AP, Nov. 13, 2011

PORTLAND, Ore. — Anti-Wall Street protesters and their supporters flooded a city park area in Portland early Sunday in defiance of an eviction order, and authorities elsewhere stepped up pressure against the demonstrators, arresting nearly two dozen.

Crowds converged on two adjacent downtown Portland parks where protesters are camped after city officials set a midnight Saturday deadline to disperse. Hours later, protesters remained though by dawn Sunday the crowd had thinned and obeyed police orders to clear the street and take down a makeshift barricades.

At one point overnight, the crowd swelled to thousands.

Organizers said they hoped enough people will join them to make it difficult if not impossible for police to carry through on any eviction.

"Occupy the street," one organizer said through a bull horn. "Remain peaceful and aware. We have strength in holding the streets."

Demonstrators had used pallets and old furniture, wood debris and even a bicycle to set up makeshift barricades on either end of a street that runs through the encampment, apparently in an attempt to block traffic. The barricades later were taken down by protesters.

Mayor Sam Adams had ordered the camp shut down, citing unhealthy conditions and the encampment's attraction of drug users and thieves.

On Sunday at an impromptu news conference, he defended his order, saying it is his job to enforce the law and keep the peace. "This is not a game," he said.
